Job summary

Humana is seeking a Principal AI Applied Engineer to define the technical strategy, architecture standards, and long-term vision for AI-enabled products across the organization. You will influence enterprise‑wide decisions on AI platforms, model strategies, and governance while remaining hands‑on in prototyping and software development.

This is the highest‑level IC role within AI Applied Engineering, demanding deep technical depth, strategic thinking, and the ability to translate emerging AI

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a technical field.
• 12+ years of software engineering, with large-scale distributed systems.
• Proven track record delivering AI-enabled platforms at enterprise scale.
• Deep expertise in LLM technologies, AI platform design, RAG, orchestration, and AI operations.
• Experience designing cloud-native, scalable, resilient architectures.
• Ability to set technical direction influencing multiple teams and portfolios.
• Experience establishing engineering standards and platform governance.
• Strong grasp of AI reliability, latency, cost, governance, observability, and risk.

Responsibilities

• Define long-term technical strategy and reference architecture for AI-enabled products.
• Establish patterns for retrieval systems, LLM orchestration, agentic workflows and governance.
• Lead organization-wide technical decision-making on model strategies and platform investments.
• Design scalable architectures balancing reliability, performance, security, and cost.
• Set engineering standards for evaluation, observability, and lifecycle management.
• Build prototypes and reference implementations to derisk emerging tech.
• Mentor engineers and lead architecture reviews across teams.
• Communicate technical roadmaps aligned with business strategy.
