What's the role

Shell is seeking a PEI Engineer to join their Sarnia Manufacturing Centre Pressure Equipment Integrity Team.


The Sarnia Manufacturing Centre Pressure Equipment Integrity (PEI) team comprises Engineers, Inspectors, Specialists, and Analysts dedicated to ensuring the safe and reliable condition of site fixed assets. Key stakeholders include site Production, Maintenance, Reliability, and Technical disciplines, who depend on the PEI Team to monitor equipment, proactively mitigate issues, and develop detailed repair scopes to prevent Loss of Primary Containment from site pressure vessels and piping.


Reporting to the Pressure Equipment Integrity Manager, the PEI Engineer will provide mechanical engineering and technical integrity functions related to the design, repair, and alteration of piping, pressure vessels, tanks, and boilers at the Sarnia Refinery and Chemical Plant.


The PEI Engineer offers technical support to PEI, Operations, and Maintenance on daily plant issues and during operational upsets or outages. The role involves supporting the site in Design Operating Window (DOW) monitoring, Management of Change, Project reviews, Fitness for Service analysis, repair plan endorsement, and liaising with TSSA.

Accountabilities:
  1. Address daily mechanical engineering concerns and requests
  2. Lead or execute Fitness-for-Service assessments
  3. Monitor operational exceedances related to equipment design, communicate gaps, and lead resolution
  4. Assist Unit Inspectors with Mechanical Engineering calculations, Engineered Clamp design reviews, repair proposal reviews, and code compliance
  5. Provide input on long-term equipment replacement versus repair strategies
  6. Ensure compliance with corporate and jurisdictional codes, standards, and best practices
  7. Develop and validate Asset Integrity initiatives, procedures, programs, and standards
  8. Communicate industry code and standard changes and perform gap assessments
  9. Interface and network with other Shell locations and Subject Matter Experts
  10. Interact with other industry Owner/Users on equipment integrity issues
  11. Act as the primary liaison for SMC with the TSSA Engineering Group

  • Flexible working schedule per SMC policy
  • Potential placement on SMC Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)
What you bring:
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada full-time
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario or equivalent (preferred)
  • At least 5 years' experience in Pressure Equipment, Asset Integrity, or related industry
  • Deep understanding of codes and standards like NBIC, ASME, Ontario Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act
  • Experience with Risk Based Inspection (RBI) and Fitness for Service (FFS) methodologies
  • Familiarity with inspection techniques and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) methods
