Job description

We are currently seeking applicants for an Equipment Breakdown Risk Engineer (EBRE) for our Columbia, MD branch operations. The EBRE operates within the Risk Engineering Department and is an integral part of the value-added services provided to our commercial insurance policyholders. The position reports to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Risk Engineering Service Branch Manager and supports the Maryland and Washington DC territories.

The primary responsibilities include performing risk evaluations, assessing exposures and controls, developing loss estimates, and communicating findings to business partners. The role involves critical thinking to determine control adequacy, loss likelihood, and insurability. The individual will conduct boiler and pressure vessel inspections following jurisdictional rules, identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and prepare reports. They will communicate these recommendations to clients and evaluate claims by investigating accidents, damages, and causes of loss. The role also involves providing risk improvement services, identifying high-loss potential exposures, and assisting underwriters with risk assessments and premium setting.

This is a remote-based position with field travel requirements.

Responsibilities:
  1. Develop risk improvement reports, recommendations, and assessment documentation.
  2. Build and maintain relationships with underwriting and service teams, agents, claims, and clients.
  3. Manage workload within an assigned territory, prioritizing and scheduling effectively.
  4. Utilize technology resources efficiently.
  5. Respond promptly and professionally to customer requests.
  6. Deliver timely, quality services and products to internal and external customers.
Qualifications:
  1. 5 to 10 years of experience inspecting boilers and pressure vessels, with ability to meet jurisdictional requirements for state commissions.
  2. Proficiency with industrial, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
  3. Ability to counsel and present to customers on safety topics.
  4. Strong time management, work planning, teamwork, and communication skills.
  5. Interpersonal skills including sales, negotiation, and customer interaction capabilities.
  6. Proficient writing skills, self-management, problem-solving, and results orientation.
Education and Certifications:
  1. High school diploma required.
  2. Current National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel commission certification required.
  3. Engineering or Science degree (2 or 4-year) is desirable but not mandatory.
