Job description

The position is part of a Production Asset team. The team has the responsibility of managing, setting functional expectations and ensuring the reliability of all asset equipment. The team is also responsible for the oversight of the operations team including daily rounds, RDC tasks and defining process plans that meet the safety operating envelopes and production objectives. This includes maintaining full control over the daily operations, resolving problems, adhering to established internal controls, and decision-making that can impact plant reliability with the focus of cost savings. The team is not only empowered, but is expected, to effect change through improvements to equipment, processes, and procedures that help steer the company towards operational and reliability excellence, while still providing the highest level of service with the resources that have been allocated to the asset.

The Equipment Asset Engineer role is 70% strategic and 30% tactical. The primary focus is to obtain and analyze data taken from all the asset equipment to identify reliability risks and build reliability strategies that predict/prevent unnecessary failures, as well as to present issues to the PAT for resolution. This involves leveraging programs that are already in place as well as modifying these programs and developing new programs to meet business needs. This role will work with the Asset Coordinators and Maintenance Supervisor to assist in urgent equipment evaluations that may arise, including leading RCFA (Cause-Mapping), resolving Seal/Pump issues, executing MOC’s, and providing technical support for operations and daily maintenance.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Backup and fill-in for the Asset Manager role as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain KPIs focused on equipment reliability.
  • Own and Develop Scope for Asset Outages and act as Scope Owner during Outage execution.
  • Support maintaining the asset protective systems integrity and equipment mechanical integrity program.
  • Assist Asset Coordinators with scope development for routine work.
  • Complete required Audits on a monthly basis.
  • Identify equipment bad actors through metrics and develop plans remediate via FMEA, RCFA, PMs and other reliability tools to improve lifecycle, reduce cost and increase MTBF of all equipment onsite.
  • Lead investigations into failed equipment and make recommendations to maintenance department for possible fixes.
  • Complete any compliance action items as assigned.
  • Take on responsible engineer role for MOC’s (as applicable) and act as MOC Manager as needed.
  • Complete and report monthly reliability reports and summaries as required.
  • Maintain the Maintenance Operating Envelope and utilize the sheet daily to help prevent failures.
  • Specify Equipment upgrades and execute small capital and expense projects.
  • Work with Project Engineering to ensure the reliability and maintainability of new and modified installations including design solutions and commissioning plans.
  • Observe and/or conduct tests at suppliers (FAT) or repair facilities to evaluate reliability factors, such as causes of equipment failures and oversight critical repairs as needed.
  • Provide input on process plans as needed to complete specific optimization and/or operations tasks.
  • PAT organization leader, conduct weekly PAT meetings to align PAT focus and hold team/support groups accountable to help drive efforts to completion.
Skills & Knowledge Required
Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or other engineering discipline.
  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • 2 or more years of experience in reliability and/or field engineering in a maintenance setting.
  • Knowledgeable in the use and integration of predictive and preventive maintenance tools.
  • Knowledgeable in reliability and failure analysis methodologies such as FMEA, RCFA, and MTBF.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply fundamental concepts of science and engineering to solve problems in a manufacturing plant.
  • Knowledge of petrochemical industry best practices (design, control, safety, etc.) preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of the PHA process, pressure relief systems, and safety instrumented systems preferred.
  • Must have a strong, demonstrated commitment to safety.
  • Advanced computer skills in spreadsheets, word processing, and database software.
  • Self-motivated, and enjoy working in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced 24/7 environment.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal skills and advanced communication skills; both written and verbal.
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, as well as perform office tasks requiring repetitive use of hands. The employee must walk, stand, and travel by car or other means and be able to work in a variety of environments that include both fieldwork and deskwork. Minimum requirements include:

  • Ability to appropriately deal with multiple & changing Asset and site priorities.
  • Maintaining constant awareness of personal safety and the safety of all other personnel. This includes knowledge of unit operation, procedures, and rules.
  • Being able to work in a safety-sensitive environment that includes large rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals.
  • Must be able to withstand both winter and summer temperatures while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Must be comfortable working in a loud environment that could include exposure to fumes/odors or vibration from surrounding equipment.
  • Being able to ascend and descend a barrel ladder with continuous vertical length of up to 35 feet.
  • Being able to climb and descend stairs up to a total structure height of 80 feet.
  • Being physically able to wear and navigate through the unit with a respirator if needed.
  • Being able to pick up a 50 lb object such as a fire extinguisher or a large book/binder.
  • Being able to work at a desk and operate routine items such as a computer and calculator; close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement.
