THE ORGANIZATION

Access Justice Brooklyn (AJB) provides high-quality, pro bono legal services and community education to our neighbors throughout Brooklyn. Using the collective talents of our dedicated staff and volunteers, we help ensure a more accessible legal system and equitable Brooklyn.

AJB operates as the premier pro bono civil legal services organization in Brooklyn, leveraging partnerships with law firms and financial institutions to maximize impact for underserved populations. The organization's programming focuses on family stability, homeowner protection, senior services, and financial security, with opportunities for expansion into complementary areas.

THE OPPORTUNITY

AJB seeks an inspiring and strategic President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth, visibility, and impact. This is an exciting opportunity for a bold, mission-driven leader to further strengthen AJB’s financial and operational foundation, drive its culture, and elevate its voice as a leading force for social, legal, and economic justice.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO’s key responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Drive AJB’s mission to honor the organization’s legacy, in partnership with the Board, while identifying new pathways for meaningful impact.
  • Lead a collaborative strategic planning process with the Board and staff to assess evolving community needs and guide measured programmatic growth.
  • Strengthen partnerships with law firms, financial institutions, government agencies, and community organizations to expand AJB’s reach and influence.

Fundraising & External Relations

  • Serve as a passionate and knowledgeable spokesperson for AJB—deepening relationships with existing supporters and cultivating new partnerships across philanthropic, corporate, legal, and government sectors.
  • Design and implement a diversified fundraising strategy to grow revenue across multiple streams, including major donors, foundations, corporations and government.

Team Leadership & Engagement

  • Develop, retain, and recruit a talented and mission-aligned team, fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusion, communication, and high performance.
  • Partner closely with the Board to ensure strong governance, foster strategic engagement, and leverage board members’ expertise and networks to advance AJB’s mission and impact.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Provide financial stewardship, actively managing budgets, financial reporting, and strategic fiscal planning to ensure organizational sustainability and financial health.
  • Partner with the Board on financial matters, providing regular updates and fostering alignment on strategy.

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal CEO is a mission-driven leader with the strategic insight, fundraising expertise, and operational and financial skill to lead AJB into its next chapter. Grounded in a deep commitment to legal, social, and economic justice, this leader is an inspiring communicator and seasoned executive who fosters high-performing teams, cultivates strong partnerships, and delivers measurable impact. With a people-centered mindset and thoughtful, decisive leadership, they will drive growth and innovation while honoring AJB’s values and deep roots in the Brooklyn community.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Organizational Leadership & Management: Significant senior nonprofit or legal-related leadership, management, fundraising, and operational experience; track record of organizational and programmatic growth.
  • Strategic Leadership & Planning: Experience in building alignments across diverse teams, clarifies priorities, and leads organizations toward shared measurable goals.
  • Fundraising & External Relations: Demonstrated success securing philanthropic, institutional, and government funding. Comfortable engaging a broad spectrum of stakeholders—from grassroots partners, volunteers to major donors and elected officials.
