Job summary

Paladin-Inc. seeks a substitute educator to cover Head Start preschool classrooms serving ages 3–5 at the Michigan City and LaPorte sites.

You will support a safe, nurturing learning environment, follow established classroom plans, and work with the team to maintain proper child supervision and documentation. The role requires knowledge of Head Start standards, Indiana regulations, and HighScope/Conscious Discipline practices.

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of preschool child development and developmentally appropriate practice.
• Ability to learn and follow Head Start standards, Indiana licensing regulations, agency policies, and classroom procedures.
• Ability to use active supervision and positive, developmentally appropriate guidance with preschool children.
• Ability to communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with children, families, and coworkers.
• Ability to work as a flexible, dependable member of different classroom teams and accept assignments at either Head Start site.

Responsibilities

• Report to the assigned Head Start site and follow the direction of the Education Manager or designated leader.
• Provide classroom coverage for staff absences, breaks, or other program needs at Michigan City or LaPorte sites.
• Maintain active supervision, required child-staff ratios, and accurate child accountability at all times.
• Follow the established schedule and HighScope routine; support developmentally appropriate learning through play and interaction.
• Use Conscious Discipline and other approved positive-guidance practices. Do not use prohibited discipline methods.
• Support participation of all children, including those with disabilities and dual language learners; implement accommodations and health plans as directed.
• Assist with daily routines and self-care activities while protecting each child's dignity and privacy.
• Maintain a clean, safe classroom; report hazards and follow hygiene and infection-control procedures.
• Follow emergency plans and participate in drills; know evacuation and communication procedures.
• Follow CACFP and USDA meal-service procedures and accommodate dietary needs.
• Observe health and development; report concerns to the Lead Teacher or manager.
• Fulfill mandated reporter responsibilities for child abuse/neglect as required by law.
• Interact warmly with families and refer questions to the assigned teacher or manager.
• Maintain confidentiality of child, family, and personnel information.
• Assist with classroom preparation, learning materials, cleanup, sanitation, and other duties.
• Complete attendance, incident, meal, timekeeping, and other records accurately and on time.
• Attend required orientation, staff meetings, training, and professional development.
