JOB TITLE: Bilingual Teacher

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SUPERVISES: Students

DEPARTMENT: English Language Services

JOB STATUS: Full-Time (35 hours/week)

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SALARY/BENEFITS: Refer to Teacher Collective Bargaining Agreement

JOB FUNCTION

The Bilingual Teacher will be responsible for delivering instruction in both English and Spanish, adhering to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) guidelines for Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) programs. The ideal candidate will understand bilingual education pedagogy, second language acquisition, and culturally responsive teaching practices. They will create a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters all students' academic growth and language development.

This position directly reports to the school principal and functionally reports to the other school administrators and district directors. It coordinates with the other teachers, instructional coaches, school psychologists, and school social workers, as well as other support staff, students, guardians, and the community.

TERM

Shall work the 10-month school calendar as defined by the Board of Education and Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Duties And Responsibilities

This list is not all-inclusive and is only intended to illustrate the various responsibilities and duties performed.

  • Plan and execute standards-aligned English and Spanish lessons, provide targeted tutoring, create instructional materials, and conduct assessments to ensure students achieve grade-level proficiency.
  • Promote language acquisition and academic achievement for ELLs with varying proficiency levels using diverse instructional strategies and resources, adapting district curriculum and assessments to meet their needs.
  • Utilize language proficiency assessments, such as ACCESS for ELLs, to gather and interpret student data, informing instructional adjustments, tracking progress, and communicating with parents/guardians and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with staff to identify ELL students; support problem-solving, resource maximization, and instructional planning.
  • Monitor student progress; communicate effectively with administrators, teachers, guardians, and students; build positive relationships.
  • Establish classroom management and safety standards; supervise students on grounds and trips as necessary.
  • Maintain required documentation including student files, attendance, and incident reports.
  • Stay informed about research and best practices in English-language education.
  • Support diversity and equity initiatives.
  • Foster a positive school climate that encourages cooperation and celebrates student achievements.
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Attend scheduled work and arrive punctually.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Education And Experience

A Bachelor's degree in Education or related field, valid state teaching license, and Bilingual or ESL endorsement are required. A Master's degree and prior teaching experience are highly preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit at a desk or stand for extended periods, lift up to 15 pounds, and adjust physical position to teach effectively. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for disabilities.
