Job summary

Western Carolina Surgery Center is seeking a FT PreOp PACU RN to join our ambulatory surgical team. The role involves preoperative assessments, patient education, and administering preop medications, with collaboration among surgeons, anesthesiologists, and staff.

The RN will provide PACU care, monitor vitals, manage pain and post-anesthesia recovery, document care, and assist with discharge planning. Requires active RN license, BLS/ACLS, and 2 years PACU/critical care experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Licensed RN with active state license.
  • BLS and ACLS required; PALS if center requires.
  • 2 years PACU or Critical Care experience preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preoperative assessments and educate patients and families.
  • Administer preoperative medications per orders and protocols.
  • Maintain infection control and IV line management.
  • Collaborate with surgical team and anesthesiologists.
  • Provide PACU care, monitor vitals, manage pain and safety.
  • Document care accurately and discharge planning when appropriate.

PreOp PACU RN at Western Carolina Surgery Center:
Preoperative Duties:
  • Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough preoperative assessments to collect patient medical histories, vital signs, and current medications.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families on the surgical process, postoperative care instructions and any necessary preparations.
  • Medication Administration: Administer prescribed medications, including preoperative sedatives and antibiotics, in accordance with physician orders and best practices.
  • Infection Control: Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols to minimize the risk of surgical site infections.
  • IV Line Management: Establish and maintain intravenous (IV) lines as required, and monitor fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the surgical team, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth flow of preoperative preparations.
Postoperative Duties:
  • Recovery Care: Provide postoperative care to patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), monitoring vital signs, pain levels, and overall well-being.
  • Patient Advocacy: Advocate for patients' comfort and safety, managing pain and addressing any immediate postoperative concerns.
  • Assessment: Continuously assess patients for signs of complications or adverse reactions, taking prompt action as needed.
  • Medication Management: Administer postoperative medications, including pain management and antiemetics, while closely monitoring their effects.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, documenting all care provided, observations, and patient responses.
  • Discharge Planning: Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure patients are ready for discharge and providing discharge instructions.
Additional Job Duty:
  • Performs circulating and/or scrub responsibilities as needed to support surgical procedures and ensure efficient patient care and operating room workflow.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited RN School of Nursing
  • Active RN license in the state
  • BLS and ACLS Required, PALS if required by the center
  • 2 years of experience in PACU or Critical Care preferred
  • Ability to make decisions based on nursing judgment
  • Able to prioritize and organize workload to meet the needs of patients and the unit
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
