Job summary

Western Carolina Surgery Center is a patient-focused ambulatory surgery center delivering high-quality outpatient surgical care. A Registered Nurse will perform preoperative assessments, educate patients and families, administer medications, and ensure infection control and IV management while collaborating with the surgical team.

The RN will provide postoperative PACU care, advocate for patient safety, monitor for complications, manage medications, document care, and assist with discharge

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited RN School of Nursing.
  • Active RN license in the state.
  • BLS and ACLS Required, PALS if required by the center
  • 2 years of experience in PACU or Critical Care preferred
  • Ability to make decisions based on nursing judgment
  • Able to prioritize and organize workload to meet patient needs
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written

Responsibilities

  • Preoperative duties: conduct thorough preoperative assessments and obtain histories, vital signs, meds.
  • Educate patients and families on surgical process and postoperative care.
  • Administer prescribed medications per physician orders and best practices.
  • Maintain strict infection control protocols to minimize SSIs.
  • Establish and manage IV lines and monitor fluids/electrolytes.
  • Collaborate with surgical team, anesthesiologists, and other professionals.
  • Provide postoperative PACU care, monitor vitals, and manage pain.
  • Advocate for patient comfort and safety, manage postoperative concerns.
  • Continuously assess patients for complications and adverse reactions.
  • Administer postoperative medications and monitor effects.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and discharge planning with team.
  • Perform circulating and/or scrub duties to support OR workflow.

RN at Western Carolina Surgery Center:
Preoperative Duties:
  1. Patient Assessment:Conduct thorough preoperative assessments to collect patient medical histories, vital signs, and current medications.
  2. Patient Education:Educate patients and their families on the surgical process, postoperative care instructions, and any necessary preparations.
  3. Medication Administration:Administer prescribed medications, including preoperative sedatives and antibiotics, in accordance with physician orders and best practices.
  4. Infection Control:Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols to minimize the risk of surgical site infections.
  5. IV Line Management:Establish and maintain intravenous (IV) lines as required, and monitor fluid and electrolyte balance.
  6. Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the surgical team, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth flow of preoperative preparations.
Postoperative Duties:
  1. Recovery Care:Provide postoperative care to patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), monitoring vital signs, pain levels, and overall well-being.
  2. Patient Advocacy:Advocate for patients' comfort and safety, managing pain and addressing any immediate postoperative concerns.
  3. Assessment:Continuously assess patients for signs of complications or adverse reactions, taking prompt action as needed.
  4. Medication Management:Administer postoperative medications, including pain management and antiemetics, while closely monitoring their effects.
  5. Documentation:Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, documenting all care provided, observations, and patient responses.
  6. Discharge Planning:Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure patients are ready for discharge and providing discharge instructions.
Additional Job Duty:
  1. Performs circulating and/or scrub responsibilities as needed to support surgical procedures and ensure efficient patient care and operating room workflow.
