Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the KBase team. The role focuses on integrating data and findings into KBase, identifying knowledge gaps, and generating testable predictions that guide experimental validation.

The position emphasizes developing and refining genome-scale models, publishing open methods, and collaborating with experimental biologists.

Qualifications

• PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Microbiology, Systems Biology, or related field (within last 1-2 years).
• Experience with computational analysis of microbial genomes: annotation, pangenomics, phylogenomics.
• Proficiency in data science, machine learning, and statistics using Python and/or R.
• Strong organizational skills and meticulous record-keeping.
• Excellent verbal and presentation skills for reports, meetings, and publications.
• Interdisciplinary collaboration and independent, data-driven research.

Responsibilities

• Annotate, classify, and analyze microbial genomes and pangenomes.
• Develop predictive models linking genotype to phenotype using KBase data.
• Design prediction and validation cycles with experimental researchers.
• Construct and refine genome-scale metabolic and microbial models.
• Develop open benchmarks to evaluate model performance against biological mechanisms.
• Publish open, FAIR methods, code, and datasets, plus discoveries.
