Job summary

Duke Health in Raleigh, NC is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for the Pre-Admission Testing Clinic. This regular, PRN role supports preoperative assessment and optimization for procedures requiring anesthesia.

Work involves collaboration with anesthesiology and various specialties, with potential telehealth and research activities. Eligible candidates include NP with adult care training or PA with ARC-accredited program.

Qualifications

• NP: Graduate of accredited DNP or MSN Nurse Practitioner program for adult care.
• PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or Doctoral Degree strongly preferred.
• NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as an NP.
• PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by the NCMB with approval to practice as a PA.
• Both: Federal and State unrestricted prescriptive authority
• NP: Prefer 2 years experience as NP in preanesthesia testing, cardiology, hospital medicine, general surgery or surgical specialties.
• PA: Prefer 2 years experience as PA in preanesthesia testing, cardiology, hospital medicine or surgical specialties.

Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed and thorough medical/surgical history assessment
• Physical exams
• Provide perioperative instructions/guidance
• Provide consults (diabetes, nutrition, smoking cessation, pain management, geriatric care, sleep apnea, anemia, cardiology and hospital medicine etc.)
• Prescribe treatment or services to further optimize the patient prior to planned procedure if needed.
• Follow up on ordered laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures, etc
• Provide explanation as to the necessity and the results of ordered testing and procedures.
• Communicationwith medical specialists and surgeons regarding preoperative optimization and surgical timing.
• Participate in clinic research activities if needed.
• Perform telehealth visits if needed.
• Work with a supervising physician from the Department of Anesthesiology
• Any other related duties required to service pre-surgical and/or pre-anesthesiacare
