Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance is opening a new Ambulatory Surgery Center in Lenexa and is hiring an experienced Pre-Assessment Phone Nurse. You will conduct telephonic assessments of patients scheduled for orthopedic surgery to determine medical readiness and ASC suitability.

Responsibilities include reviewing H&Ps, coordinating clearances, and educating patients on pre-operative requirements. Requires 2+ years RN experience and Kansas licensure with a strong focus on patient safety and

Qualifications

• RN with min 2 years of experience in pre-admission testing, pre-op, PACU, or ambulatory surgery.
• Licensed in Kansas or compact system with active credentialing.
• BLS required; ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

• Review patient charts, H&Ps, outside records, labs, imaging, and specialist notes prior to scheduled surgery.
• Conduct structured pre-operative phone interviews to obtain medical history and medication lists.
• Apply criteria to determine ASC candidacy and flag high-risk cases for review.
• Coordinate referrals for clearance (cardiology/primary care/pulmonology) and arrange required testing.
• Communicate risks and clearance needs to surgeons and OR scheduling team.
• Educate patients on pre-operative instructions and day-of-surgery expectations.
• Document assessments and communications in the EMR with accuracy.

This RN reviews history and physical (H&P) documentation, outside medical records, diagnostic results, and medication lists, then conducts a structured phone interview with each patient to identify risk factors, comorbidities, and any conditions that could affect surgical or anesthesia safety in an outpatient setting. The role is critical to case-day efficiency, cancellation prevention, and patient safety.This is a full-time position.ResponsibilitiesReview patient charts, H&Ps, outside records, labs, imaging, and specialist notes prior to scheduled surgeryConduct structured pre-operative phone interviews to obtain complete medical, surgical, anesthesia, and medication historyScreen for comorbidities and risk factors (cardiac, pulmonary, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, bleeding disorders, BMI, anticoagulant use, etc.) that may affect candidacy for outpatient/ASC surgeryApply facility and anesthesia-approved patient selection criteria to determine ASC surgical appropriateness; flag high-risk patients for anesthesia/surgeon reviewReconcile medication lists and provide hold instructions for anticoagulants, diabetic medications, and other pre-op medication adjustments per protocol/surgeon ordersIdentify need for additional clearance (cardiology, primary care, pulmonology) or pre-op testing (labs, EKG, imaging) and coordinate obtaining results before surgery dateCommunicate identified risks, missing information, or clearance needs to surgeons, anesthesia providers, and OR scheduling team in a timely mannerEducate patients on pre-operative instructions, including NPO status, medication management, and day-of-surgery expectationsDocument all assessments, findings, and communications accurately and thoroughly in the EMRCoordinate with scheduling to reschedule or flag cases when patients do not meet ASC candidacy criteriaServe as a point of contact for patients with pre-operative questions or concernsMaintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and facility documentation standardsExperience/Education/Licensing.Minimum 2 years RN experience; pre-admission testing, pre-op, PACU, med-surg, or ambulatory surgery experience strongly preferredStrong working knowledge of comorbidities and risk factors relevant to outpatient surgical candidacyComfortable interpreting labs, EKGs, and specialist clearance documentationExcellent telephone communication, critical thinking, and independent clinical judgment skillsCurrent Kansas RN license (or compact license)Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in NursingBLS required; ACLS preferredPhysical RequirementsAbility to sit/work at a computer and phone workstation for extended periods; visual and auditory acuity for detailed chart review and patient interviews.We provide a robust benefits package, including:Rich PTO Accruals6 company paid holidaysFull benefits package including medical, dental and vision401(k) with a company matchEmployer paid life insurance and long term disabilityMany other voluntary benefits available
