FPT Industrial, the global powertrain brand of Iveco Group, seeks an Engine Test Bench Operator in Burr Ridge, IL. You will install engines and instrumentation, monitor tests, and support engineering with lab activities.

The Engine Test Bench Operator supports daily operations within the Burr Ridge Engine Testing Lab by installing engines and related components in test cells, preparing instrumentation and measurement equipment, and assisting with engine test execution in accordance with established procedures. This role works closely with engineering and laboratory personnel to ensure safe, accurate, and reliable testing activities while maintaining high standards for safety, documentation, and equipment readiness.

This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install engines, powertrain components, and related equipment in test cells in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements.
  • Install, connect, calibrate, and verify instrumentation, sensors, and measurement equipment required for engine testing.
  • Monitor test cell operations during test execution, promptly identifying and reporting equipment malfunctions, abnormal operating conditions, or safety concerns.
  • Provide hands‑on support to engineering teams by executing test procedures, following work instructions, and performing assigned laboratory activities.
  • Accurately document test cell activities, observations, maintenance actions and operational events in test logs and designated documentation systems.

Required Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • Associate degree in a technical discipline such as Diesel Technology, Engine Technology, Automotive Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical principles, engine systems, and practical troubleshooting methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, assembly instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of diesel, gasoline, and natural gas engine operation and associated thermal systems.
  • Assemble, disassemble, inspect, repair, overhaul, and support maintenance of engine, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanics, electrical systems, and electronics.
  • Safely use basic shop and machine tools, including drills, saws, welding equipment, and cutting machines.
  • Knowledge of common measuring instruments used in metalworking, machining, and mechanical assembly environments.
  • Basic computer proficiency with Windows-based applications and accurate data entry for test, inspection, and maintenance records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical certification as a Diesel Technician, Engine Technician, Automotive Technician, Mechanical Technician, or similar trade certification.
  • Experience with engines, industrial equipment, commercial vehicles, mechanical maintenance, testing laboratories, prototype shops, R&D environments, or engineering support functions.
  • Experience fabricating fixtures, prototype components or measurement devices to support testing activities.
  • Experience with engine test cells, dynamometers, or data acquisition systems is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work safely in an active engine testing laboratory environment with exposure to noise, vibration, heat, exhaust systems, and moving mechanical equipment.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or move equipment up to 30 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment while performing work in the testing facility.
  • Respond promptly to operational issues or emergency situations within the testing facility and follow established local emergency response procedures.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work around engines and testing equipment for extended periods.
