Job summary

The AES Corporation is seeking power systems/engineering interns to join the AES US Utilities - T&D Standards & Innovation team. Interns will support DOE-funded projects on grid protection, control, planning, and DER/EV integration, while learning engineering practices and equipment standards.

Ideal candidates are advanced degree students with strong academics, programming capability, and familiarity with power flow and stability concepts.

Qualifications

Master's or PhD student in EE preferred; undergrad degree in EE/EE Technology required.
Strong academic background with attention to detail and good organization/presentation skills.
Familiarity with power flow equations, symmetry components, and stability is recommended.
Proficiency in power system analysis and control simulation software is helpful.
Proficiency in at least one programming language is required.

Responsibilities

Support development of new protection and control technologies for future grids.
Develop HIL testing plans for protective relays, controllers, and sensors.
Investigate and deploy communication platforms for centralized and edge control.
Conduct power system analysis using PSSE, PSCAD, CYME, DSA Tools, and ASPEN/CAPE.
Develop statistical models to predict power system parameters.
Analyze grid-enhancing technologies and their applications.
Assist with equipment evaluations, tests, pilots, and standardization.
Prepare and present technical papers/reports.
Collaborate with utility departments to ensure project success.
Perform other tasks as assigned by the manager.
