Job summary

AES Corporation invites power systems engineering interns to join the US Utilities – T&D Standards & Innovation team. Interns will support DOE-awarded projects focusing on grid protection, control, and optimization for DERs and EVs.

Responsibilities include HIL test planning, protection relay work, and advanced power system analysis using industry tools. Preferred candidates are graduate students in Electrical Engineering with strong programming and analytical skills, and the position offers

Qualifications

  • Master or PhD preferred, second-year student or higher
  • Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Strong academic background and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with power flow equations, symmetry, and power system stability recommended
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language required

Responsibilities

  • Support development of protection and control technologies for future grids
  • Develop hardware-in-the-loop testing plans for relays, controllers, sensors
  • Investigate and deploy communication platforms for centralized/edge control
  • Conduct power system analysis using PSSE, PSCAD, CYME, DSA Tools, ASPEN/CAPE
  • Develop models to predict power system parameters
  • Analyze grid-enhancing technologies and their applications
  • Assist with equipment evaluations, tests, pilots, and standardization
  • Prepare and present technical papers/reports
  • Collaborate with utility departments to ensure project success
  • Complete additional assignments as determined by supervisor
