Job summary

The City of Austin's Austin Energy division is seeking a Power System Principal Engineer to lead system protection studies, settings development, and regulatory compliance across transmission, substation, and distribution assets in Austin. The role requires strong analytical skills, mentorship of engineers, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities include guiding protection design, reviewing contracts, and ensuring compliance with NERC, FERC, ERCOT and TX PUC standards

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; eight (8) years of engineering experience.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas; or ability to obtain TX PE within one year.
• Experience in system protection design fundamentals, mentoring, and leadership.
• Strong knowledge of NERC, FERC, ERCOT and TX PUC regulatory requirements.
• Ability to travel to multiple sites as needed.

Responsibilities

• Develops technical specifications and standards for protection systems.
• Plans, researches, designs, and implements engineering studies and projects.
• Mentors and leads a team of engineers.
• Ensures compliance with project specs and regulatory requirements.
• Collaborates with consultants, contractors, and internal staff.
