Job summary

Mississippi Power is seeking a Power System Coordinator (Transmission System Operator) – MCC to ensure safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Power Transmission System. The role emphasizes real-time monitoring, control, and decision-making during normal and abnormal conditions.

The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of transmission systems, substation equipment, and generation control, with excellent communication and leadership skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering is desirable (not required) and may be considered in lieu of experience.
• Thorough understanding of the operation of an electric system is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Minute-to-minute monitoring and control of the bulk electric power system under normal system conditions.
• Analysis and evaluation of the system, determination of restoration actions and implementation of those actions under abnormal system conditions.
• Writing and executing switching orders, including directing field employees performing switching operations.
• Monitor real-time and perform future studies for N-1 contingency solutions.
• Adhere to all NERC compliance standards.

This position holds primary responsibility for the safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Power Transmission System at Mississippi Power (MPC). This includes real time monitoring, operation, and control of the system.

Responsibilities Include

• Minute-to-minute monitoring and control of the bulk electric power system under normal system conditions.
• Analysis and evaluation of the system, determination of restoration actions and implementation of those actions under abnormal system conditions.
• Writing and executing switching orders, including directing field employees performing switching operations.
• Monitor real-time and perform future studies for N-1 contingency solutions.
• The ability to remain current in understanding and implementation of all NERC compliance standards.

Education Requirements

• A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is desirable (not required) and may be considered in lieu of experience.
• A thorough understanding of the operation of an electric system is necessary.

Experience And Knowledge Requirements

• Prior experience in Transmission Systems highly desired (Substations, Transmission Lines, Operations, or Protection & Controls).
• Extensive knowledge and/or experience in transmission system operations and characteristics is preferred.
• Extensive knowledge and/or experience in substation equipment and their operating characteristics is preferred.
• General knowledge and/or experience in generation control, system protection, and system control is desired.

• Excellent written and clear oral communications skills.
• Comprehensive computer skills and ability to utilize numerous computer applications.

• The ability to handle multiple inputs and tasks at one time, prioritize work and provide leadership during critical system events.
• Superior problem-solving skills and be comfortable making decisions with limited input and extreme time constraints.

Other Requirements

• This position requires shift work on a rotational basis working shifts which are 12 hours in length. Shifts include days, nights, and weekends.
• Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Standard of Conduct must be signed and adhered to.
• The applicant must already possess or be able to obtain within one year, certification by the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) as a Transmission Operator.
