Job summary

Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities is seeking a Boiler Operator Trainee in East Lansing, MI. The role provides hands-on training to operate and monitor boiler systems and related equipment, with progression toward Boiler Operator status.

Salary ranges from $21.82 to $27.16 per hour with step increases and excellent benefits. In-person work is required; union representation is in transition.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Must pass Mechanical Aptitude/Hands-On Assessment with emphasis in heavy equipment or mechanic environment.
• Frequent lifting of 50 pounds and occasional lifting over 75 pounds; valid vehicle operator's license required.
• Must be able to drive a university vehicle to perform job duties.

Responsibilities

• 40%: Checks demineralizers, condensate polishers, compressors, closed heaters, vacuum jets, pumps, fans and similar equipment; assists in regenerating demineralizers and polishers.
• 30%: Receives practical training in and learns basics of power plant operations; participates in and passes training programs to advance to Boiler Operator.
• 20%: Records data; assists in boiler start-up/shut-down; assists in lubrication and cleaning; supports maintenance/overhaul work.
• 10%: Correspondence via email, training, meetings and professional development.
