Job description

SUMMARY:

This is the second level of the Distribution Engineering Technologist classification. The purpose of this position is to provide an intermediate level of experienced technical expertise to accurately evaluate complex options and provide power distribution facility designs for residential and small to medium-sized commercial and industrial projects in a safe, cost-effective, and reliable manner. Incumbents are expected to demonstrate an intermediate to high level of experience with customer design and workflow processes/procedures and technical skills in the client’s specific areas of expertise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

With limited direct supervision and guidance, the incumbent is responsible for performing the following duties:

  1. Interpret codes, standards, regulations, requirements, and guidelines. Maintain records and update company/client systems.
  2. Develop moderately difficult to complex site designs for electrical distribution facilities, adhering to client and company policies.
  3. Create safe, cost-effective designs for projects involving overhead or underground distribution, including commercial, industrial, high-profile, highway relocation, and other projects requiring high reliability.
  4. Prepare project and job packages, including material lists, requisitions, site drawings, and construction drawings, ensuring safety and reliability.
  5. Coordinate with construction personnel and clients to resolve design or customer issues on-site.
  6. Create work requests using current work management tools and communicate schedules, project feasibility, and expectations effectively.
  7. Apply reliability principles to resolve power quality issues by evaluating equipment loading and ensuring safe, cost-effective designs.
  8. Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external customers, supporting business goals professionally.
  9. Perform fieldwork as needed to validate system requirements.
  10. Assist in training other employees.
  11. Practice and promote all safety policies and procedures consistently.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by management.

COMPLEXITY OF WORK:

Moderately routine with some decision-making involved.

RELATIONSHIPS OUTSIDE WORKGROUP:

Influences decisions of a moderate nature requiring tact.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  2. Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required; associate's degree preferred. A bachelor's degree in non-engineering science, math, or business is preferred. 1-3 years of experience in utility power distribution engineering or craft.
  3. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: N/A
  4. On-the-Job Training: Combination of shadowing, classroom training, and interaction with experienced employees during the first year.
  5. Language Skills: Ability to interpret documents, write reports, and communicate effectively in small groups.
  6. Mathematical Skills: Proficiency in basic operations, applying concepts like fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra, and geometry.
  7. Reasoning Ability: Ability to interpret instructions and solve problems involving multiple variables.
  8. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work with diverse individuals, self-motivated, reliable, team player, negotiating, time management, proficient in Microsoft Office, capable of managing multiple tasks, valid driver’s license, and ability to participate in storm restoration activities if qualified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical activities include standing, walking, sitting, talking, using hands, climbing, stooping, reaching, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work may involve wet/humid conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, high places, outdoor weather, risk of electrical shock, and other hazards, with occasional exposure. Noise level is moderate.

While performing this job, the noise level in the work environment is moderate (e.g., office with typewriters, computers, light traffic).
