Job summary

TRC is seeking a Distribution Designer I for the Power Distribution Engineering Group in Grand Rapids, MI. The role focuses on field data collection and detailed design of electric and natural gas distribution systems, with back-office support and client liaison.

Responsibilities include preparing drawings, specs, calculations, and estimates; gaining familiarity with NESC and industry standards; and maintaining project quality through field data, reports, and databases.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree acceptable but not required.
• 1+ years Electric Utility or telecommunications field experience preferred
• Familiarity with National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) preferred.
• Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office applications desired
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to track and manage day-to-day activities.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• AutoCAD / PLS CADD or similar programs preferred
• Proficient use of engineering software (Preferred).
• Field Maps (Preferred)
• No certifications required.
• Clear and Valid Driver's license is required.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Occasional travel is primarily regional to the utility client(s) territory during the business day or overnight.
• Storm Duty.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed design of electric & natural gas distribution systems. This includes field notes, drawings, specifications, and design estimates.
• Acquire a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and industry standards.
• Gain broad knowledge of engineering disciplines and construction methods and economics involved.
• Maintain production and quality of projects, including field data, photos, analyses, reports, and databases.
• Prepare and modify electrical and roadway drawings, specs, calculations, charts and construction packages.
• Perform field technical services for operation, inspection, and maintenance of distribution systems.
• Use laptop, tablet, GPS, and other devices to collect data for database input.
• Develop knowledge of telephone, cable, and other communications facilities.
• Operate equipment to take measurements on poles and mid-span facilities; inspect and maintain pad-mount equipment.
• Present ideas clearly in formal and informal settings and communicate ethically.
• Share complete and accurate information with others and communicate effectively with all levels.
