Job summary

TRC Companies, Inc. seeks a Distribution Designer I to join our Power Distribution Engineering Group in Grand Rapids, MI. You will perform field data collection and detailed designs for electric and natural gas distribution systems, supporting back-office activities.

The role requires knowledge of NESC and engineering standards, proficiency with AutoCAD/PLS CADD, and ability to work with engineers and field crews. Local travel may be required; a valid driver’s license is essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree acceptable but not required.
• 1+ years Electric Utility or telecommunications field experience preferred.
• Familiarity with National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) preferred.
• Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office applications desired.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to track and manage day-to-day activities.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• AutoCAD / PLS CADD or similar programs preferred.
• Proficient use of engineering software (Preferred).
• Field Maps (Preferred).
• Clear and Valid Driver's license is required.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Occasional travel is primarily regional to the utility client(s) territory during the business day or overnight.
• Storm Duty.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed design of electric & natural gas distribution systems, including field notes, drawings, specifications and estimates.
• Acquire working knowledge of NESC, national engineering standards and utility construction standards.
• Acquire broad knowledge of engineering disciplines and construction methods and economics.
• Maintain production and quality of projects and manage documents/records.
• Prepare and modify electrical and roadway drawings, specifications, calculations, charts & graphs, and construction packages.
• Perform field technical services for operation, inspection and maintenance of distribution systems.
• Collect field data using laptops, tablets, GPS and other devices for database input.
• Develop knowledge of telephone, cable, and other communications facilities.
• Operate equipment to measure utility poles and mid-span facilities; inspect and maintain pad-mount equipment.
• Communicate ideas clearly and ethically in writing and verbally with colleagues and clients.
