Power Dispatcher Job Description
The Power Dispatcher will coordinate, control, and document the activities of the MBTA power system, ensuring that adequate power is available to meet the Authority's needs and alerting the appropriate personnel in the event of power problems.
- Monitor and control the operation of the gas turbine/generator complex.
- Oversee the A.C. power transmission network and the entire substation system to ensure all equipment is available to supply D.C. power for operating Rapid Transit and Surface Lines.
- Maintain and update all maps and plans related to the power system to keep them current.
- Communicate closely with Rapid Transit and Surface Line Dispatchers regarding all power system changes.
- Supervise the safe removal, replacement, and repair of cables and equipment pertinent to the power system.
- Coordinate power off and on requests and associated switching procedures.
- Direct personnel to identify and resolve power problems.
- Ensure all power-related reports are current and forwarded to authorized personnel.
- Respond courteously and professionally to inquiries from customers, vendors, or coworkers.
- Be available to respond to emergencies, extreme weather, or abnormal conditions 24/7.
- Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority, fostering effective relationships with employees.
- Assist in workforce management by ensuring adherence to rules, regulations, policies, and collective bargaining agreements, including EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies, and proper PPE usage.
- Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Additional responsibilities may focus on specific departments or locations, as detailed in applicable addenda.
Minimum Qualifications
- A High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution.
- Two (2) years of experience in electric utility dispatching of high and medium voltage substation operations and power transmission/distribution systems.
- Effective organizational, analytical, multitasking, time management, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think and act quickly to resolve revenue service issues while ensuring safety.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, or database applications.
- Excellent customer service, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
- Availability to work any shift or location, including 24/7 availability.
- Ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
- Adherence to MBTA rules, regulations, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
- English language proficiency necessary for effective job performance.
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Related supervisory experience.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
- Six (6) years of experience with substation operations and maintenance, or equivalent experience in medium voltage systems as a line worker or electrician.
