Job Description

This recruitment will be used to fill 9 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant positions for the Crop & Soil Science Extension Department at Oregon State University (OSU). Season project involving preparations and planting seed potato samples in soil-floored greenhouses. Conditions are sometimes dusty and include working with hand tools to cut seed pieces, planting the pieces, and helping to keep detailed records. Position is located at Oregon State University main campus, in Corvallis, and is approximately from October1,2026 to February17,2027.

Position Duties

Applicants will need to be detail oriented to keep and maintain careful records. This position will be conducted in a greenhouse and involves the use of hand tools. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparation of greenhouses for planting
  • Raking and watering
  • Arranging seed potato samples for planting
  • Treating to break dormancy
  • Lifting and stacking 50lb bags of potatoes
  • Cutting seed
  • Planting by hand
  • General clean-up

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.   • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

Required: Capable of lifting 50lb bags of potatoes. Ability to work in a dusty environment. Detail-oriented and able to carefully record and maintain records. Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.

Conditions are sometimes dusty and include working with hand tools. Flexible work schedule: weekdays around classes and between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm; 10 or more hours per week depending on workload.
