Job summary

The University of Vienna invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the MemoryLane project, exploring neural plasticity and gut-brain interactions using neuroimaging, microbiome profiling, and cognitive-behavioural assessments.

Based in the Faculty of Psychology and CeMESS, the role includes data analysis of 16S and metagenomics, collaboration across facilities, supervision of PhD candidates, and potential probiotic intervention studies.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in microbiology/biological sciences.
  • Background in microbiology and/or microbiome-brain interactions, involving experimental work.
  • Comprehensive understanding of gut microbial- and/or neurophysiology, with a strong preference for experience with both.
  • Excellent bioinformatics skills, including working knowledge of R and other programming languages, and excellent knowledge of statistical data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative, diverse research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support research focus on microbiome-brain interactions and their role in neural plasticity in the human brain.
  • Analyze existing human gut microbial data (16S; metagenomics) and neuroimaging data, and cognitive-behavioural outputs.
  • Integrate multifaceted data for meaningful interpretation and contribute to probiotic intervention studies.
  • Supervise 1–2 PhD candidates and collaborate with core facilities (Joint Microbiome Facility).
