Job summary

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Seattle seeks a highly qualified researcher/engineer to support data collection, analysis, and reporting for evaluating emerging maritime and port-related energy technologies. The role involves interfacing with lab staff and external partners to advance maritime energy innovation.

Responsibilities include building data systems, managing pipelines, and producing clear, publication-ready results.

Qualifications

• PhD completed within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
• Demonstrated knowledge of maritime infrastructure, ports, or industrial transportation technologies.
• PhD in engineering, energy policy, or related field.
• Demonstrated interest and ability to publish work in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Experience working with collaborators with diverse backgrounds and interdisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Support design and integration of data collection systems on assets such as vessels, vehicles, and equipment.
• Set up and manage data infrastructure, including pipelines to access, store, manage, validate, and clean raw data.
• Develop workflows, database structures, and documentation to ensure reliability and traceability.
• Conduct data analysis to support research questions related to energy consumption, power demand, and fuel-use efficiency across trips and operating modes.
• Produce written summaries, including methodology, results, and interpretation for publications and reports.
• Develop strategy for leveraging novel data, analysis capabilities, and tools across the portfolio and with external partners.
• Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including engineers, software developers, and program leads.
