Job summary

Argonne National Laboratory's Nanocomposite Materials and Membrane Manufacturing group invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to develop materials, membranes, and fabrication methods for energy storage. The project employs solution-based synthesis (electrospinning, slot-die coating, 3D printing) to fabricate battery electrodes and solid electrolytes.

The candidate will design experiments, analyze data, publish results, and collaborate with academia and industry while working on-site

Qualifications

  • PhD in chemical engineering, materials science or related fields (0–5 years since completion).
  • Demonstrated knowledge in materials synthesis and characterization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in battery technologies (lithium-ion, solid-state, sodium-ion, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of transport property study.
  • Experience in ink synthesis and characterization.
  • Experience in coating, printing, or wet-chemistry deposition techniques.
  • Experience using analytical tools such as XRD, SEM/TEM, FTIR, Raman, and electrochemical methods (EIS, battery cycler).
  • Publication record with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute to proposals, reports, and journal papers/patents.

Responsibilities

  • Explore optimum synthesis conditions for battery electrolyte materials, solid-state electrolyte film, and membrane electrode fabrication.
  • Formulate slurry for coating and printing processability.
  • Study coating and drying to control membrane microstructures and transport properties.
  • Design electrodes, electrolyte, and interfacial layers for solid-state batteries.
  • Characterize mass transport phenomena.
  • Develop techniques for electrochemical measurements and post-mortem analysis.
  • Write reports and high-impact papers; present at conferences.
  • Develop or support collaborations with academia and industry.
