2-year postdoc in Philosophy of Physics at Pittsburgh
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral associate position in the philosophy of physics at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated to the department of History and Philosophy of Science and the Department of Philosophy. The position will be supervised by David Wallace, and applicants should intend to pursue a course of research in an area or areas of philosophy of physics related to Professor Wallace’s research activities, if possible, to include quantum gravity, quantum field theory, the Everett interpretation and its connection with causal reasoning, and questions of scientific representation. The postdoctoral associate may be asked to carry out some minor administrative work to assist Professor Wallace’s research, amounting to at most 10% of their time, averaged over the period of appointment; the remainder of their time is available for their own research project.
The position is for one year in the first instance, to begin at an agreed-upon date in or around August 2025. The salary for year 1 is $62,232 + benefits, along with a $2,000 p/a research allowance. It is expected that the position will be renewable for one, but not more than one, year.
The postdoctoral associate will be expected to be a resident in Pittsburgh during the course of the position. It is hoped that the postdoctoral associate will be provided with office space in the Philosophy or HPS departments, but this unfortunately cannot be guaranteed. The associate will receive the University of Pittsburgh’s usual package of benefits for postdocs; details may be found at https://www.as.pitt.edu/right-sidebar/postdoctoral-fellowship-program/stipends-and-benefits .
Applicants should have received a PhD in a relevant subject (physics, philosophy, or mathematics) by the start of their appointment. Applications should comprise an academic CV, a brief (2-3 paragraph) statement of planned research, and either a writing sample or a link to a publicly available writing sample. To receive full consideration, applications should be made by June 27, 2025.
