Overview

The Gurkar laboratory at The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine - Aging Institute is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). This role involves applying MFM and other scanning probe techniques to study biological and magnetic materials at the nanoscale, contributing to research in nanotechnology, materials science, and biophysics, focusing on magnetic phenomena in cellular senescence.

Key Responsibilities
  1. MFM Imaging and Analysis: Conduct high-resolution MFM experiments on biological and magnetic materials, ensuring precise data collection and analysis.
  2. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work with experts in materials science, biology, and physics to investigate magnetic properties in complex systems.
  3. Instrument Operation: Operate MFM equipment efficiently, troubleshoot technical issues.
  4. Data Interpretation: Analyze MFM data to distinguish magnetic signals from topographic artifacts and quantify magnetic properties.
  5. Experimental Design: Design experiments exploring magnetic interactions in biological systems and magnetic materials.
  6. Dissemination: Publish research findings and present at conferences and seminars.
Qualifications
  1. PhD in Physics, Materials Science/Engineering, Nanotechnology, Biophysics, or related field, with experience in MFM or AFM.
  2. Strong knowledge of magnetism and nanoscale magnetic interactions.
  3. Hands-on experience with MFM operation, probe selection, and image interpretation.
  4. Proficiency in analyzing MFM data using software like Gwyddion or SPIP.
  5. Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team.
  6. Track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant fields.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience applying MFM to biological materials.
  2. Background in surface science and nanoscale interactions; experience with FTIR, Raman, TEM is a plus.
  3. Problem-solving skills for troubleshooting and experimental design.
  4. Effective communication skills, with experience presenting at conferences and publishing research.
