Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a per diem Medical Interpreter to facilitate in-person and telephone encounters between clinicians and Portuguese-speaking patients. The role acts as a liaison, explains cultural considerations, translates patient materials, and supports staff training and outreach.

The position requires a BA or equivalent, bilingual fluency, strong medical interpreting skills, and experience in clinical settings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience.
• Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation.
• Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
• Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
• Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese.
• Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment.
• Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.
• Acts as a liaison between patients and staff; informs clinicians about cultural considerations.
• Translate patient information materials, consent forms, etc., and edit translated materials.
• Identify areas to meet needs of Portuguese-speaking communities; assist with outreach and signage.
• Explain interpreter model to clinicians and patients; assist with staff interpreter training.
• Assist with coordination/scheduling of freelance interpreters and data entry.
• Support patients outside clinical appointments and contribute to a welcoming environment.
