Job summary

Tufts Medicine in Boston seeks a professional Medical Interpreter to provide accurate interpretation for patients and families with Limited English Proficiency in a busy hospital environment.

Under supervision, you will translate spoken language, assist with consent, appointments, and procedures, and maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA. This is a full-time, in-person role requiring certification and at least one year of interpreting experience.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Medical Interpreter Certification or a recognized interpreter training certificate with a competency exam.
• Minimum one year of interpreting experience; bilingual required.

Responsibilities

• Interprets spoken language from English into the target language and back for patients, physicians and staff.
• Combines language and cultural interpretation to facilitate understanding.
• Participates in family meetings with social workers to assist in completing forms and obtaining assistance.
• Contacts non-English speaking patients to obtain signatures, notify appointments, and explain procedures.
• May accompany patients to operating rooms or other departments when needed.
• Translates correspondence and documents from English into the target language.
• May take on-call requests for emergencies at night and on weekends.
• Maintains collaborative relationships within the team to achieve goals.
