Job summary

Ohio State Highway Patrol is hiring a Portable Load Limit Inspector in Findlay, OH, to set up/operate scales at rotating sites and weigh stations. You will check weights against state limits and inspect various vehicles and loads, using height sticks and portable or stationary scales.

Hours are 8:00am–5:00pm with potential variation. This full-time role requires a valid driver's license and offers multiple pay increases and free parking. Contact Kate Veeley for application details.

Qualifications

  • Formal education that includes reading, writing & speaking English & in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division.
  • Or equivalent of the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
  • POSITION SPECIFIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up &/or operates portable &/or stationary platform scales at selected rotating sites &/or weigh stations to check weight of commercial vehicles for compliance with state weight limits.
  • Weighs & inspects self-propelled construction equipment, commercial vehicles &/or loads relative to legal limitations & special hauling permit limitations using a height stick & portable &/or stationary scales.
  • Utilizes a state-owned portable scale vehicle to transport scales.
  • Answers inquiries from the general public regarding information & directions.
  • May appear in court as a witness relative to overload citations.

Renewal of driver license as required by law.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

May be exposed to vehicles leaking hazardous materials or on fire & animal wastes; may work outside exposed to weather; exposed to traffic noise & gasoline fumes; requires travel when operating portable scales; may be required to work evenings; may be required to crawl under vehicles; exposed to moving traffic while placing signs & cones to designate selected weigh site & during inspections; may be exposed to unsecure loads during inspections.

Background Check Information
  • A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required on all selected applicants.
