Job description

Police Recruits are non-sworn (civilian) employees who attend a police academy to prepare for a law enforcement career. Upon successful completion, they are sworn in as Police Officers with a salary ranging from $8,479.00 to $10,307.00 per month (base salary only, excluding pay additives such as bilingual pay, senior officer pay, etc.).

Police Officers play a vital role in partnering with the City and community to identify and resolve crime issues affecting residents' quality of life. The diverse community and vibrant environment make Santa Ana an exciting and demanding place to work.

Characteristics of Successful Performers

Successful officers are decisive, fair, and able to apply the law judiciously. They demonstrate community-oriented policing principles and show concern for community safety and quality of life. They are alert, proactive, and capable of working independently or as part of a team. Proficiency in report writing, paperwork, and willingness to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, are essential.

Job Functions and Requirements

A minimum of one year of work experience in any field, an A.A. or B.A. degree, or military experience is highly desirable. For detailed requirements, see the Requirements link.

Bilingual fluency is not required but is beneficial. Applicants interested in bilingual pay must be fluent in English and one of the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Samoan, Hmong, Korean, or Cambodian.

Note: Applicants who fail the written or oral exams must wait at least three months to reapply. Those failing psychological evaluation or Chief's file review must wait one year.

Selection Process

Applicants who pass initial screening, supplemental questionnaire, and background checks, and meet qualifications, will proceed through the following components:

  1. Frontline National Examination: Includes video simulations and tests on human relations, report writing, and reading comprehension. A minimum score of 60% on the video and 70% overall is required. PELLETB scores within one year of application are accepted in lieu of this exam with a minimum score of 46.
  2. Physical Agility Exam: Timed tests including a 1.5-mile run (must be completed within 14 minutes), obstacle course, and dummy drag. Candidates must meet performance standards to pass.
  3. Background Orientation: Preparation of personal statement, review of background packet, and interview.
  4. Oral Interview: Assesses experience and qualifications. A minimum score of 70% is required.

Candidates will undergo additional assessments including a background investigation, polygraph, psychological, and medical examinations before appointment. Success in all steps is necessary for placement on the eligible list and potential appointment.
