Are you detail-driven, highly organized, and ready to make a difference in your community? The City of Chino Police Department is looking for a motivated Police Records Technician to join our team! In this vital civilian role, you’ll play a key part in keeping our police records accurate, secure, and accessible—supporting the behind-the-scenes work that helps our officers protect and serve. You'll use your knowledge of office systems, police procedures, and confidentiality laws to manage sensitive information with care and precision. - Type and process and maintain a variety of police records and reports, ensuring accuracy, proper authorization, and compliance with legal standards.
- Assist the public and law enforcement personnel by providing information, processing requests, and releasing reports in line with regulations.
- Operate computer systems and databases to input, update, and retrieve sensitive law enforcement data, including warrants, arrests, property information, record checks and audit files.
- Perform clerical tasks such as sorting, filing, scanning, and distributing records; manage fees and balance a cash drawer when needed.
- Compile and prepare detailed reports on crimes, arrests, and case activity; support the Detective Bureau and/or court liaison functions as assigned.
- A female Records Technician may perform matron duties including searching prisoners, collecting urine samples, and supervising individuals in custody; may be temporarily assigned to care for juveniles.
- Ensure professionalism and confidentiality while interacting with officers, outside agencies, and the public—always reflecting the City’s values and mission.
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position is qualifying. A typical example includes:
Education:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Typing certificate with a minimum typing speed of 40 net words per minute, dated no earlier than one year from application date.
Experience:
- One (1) year of general clerical experience which includes a variety of data entry and record keeping tasks as well as public contact work in a fast-paced environment.
Training/Safety Requirements:
- Completion of specialized training in the clerical occupational field.
- Job specific training will be provided according to class specifications during work hours.
Knowledge of:- Principles, codes, regulations, and laws governing Police records management.
- Organization, Procedures, and operations of the Police Department.
- Data processing systems/applications.
Ability to:
- Explain and apply policies and procedures.
- Choose among alternatives to resolve problems.
- Communicate effectively with a variety of personnel and establish/maintain effective working relationships.
- Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
- Work efficiently and independently without direct ongoing supervision.
- Perform simple mathematical computations.
- Use correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Type at a minimumrate of 40 net words per minute.
- Deal tactfully and courteously with internal and external customers.
- Be attentive to details.
- Must be able to provide a typing certificate dated no later than one year ago.
- Possess a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
- Work a rotating schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Receive satisfactory results from a background investigation, a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, and an administrative review (external applicants).
