Position Overview

The Police Officer at the University of Kansas is a commissioned law enforcement position with full authority under applicable law. The role involves duties in accordance with departmental rules, state laws, city ordinances, law enforcement ethics, the US Constitution, and principles of law enforcement. Candidates without Kansas law enforcement certification will be sent to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center for training. Responsibilities include criminal investigations, searches and seizures, arrests, court presentations, emergency responses, traffic law enforcement, and collaboration with other agencies.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Patrols and responds to incidents, conducts investigations, and enforces laws. Includes traffic management, accident scene management, and evidence handling.
  2. Completes reports and manages evidence documentation.
  3. Apprehends suspects and testifies in court.
  4. Responds to emergencies, operates vehicles safely, and provides aid.
  5. Engages with the community, providing information and building relationships.
  6. Maintains equipment, weapons, and vehicles, and participates in training.
  7. Maintains certifications and adheres to legal and departmental policies.
  8. Performs additional duties as assigned, including supervision and training.

Position Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years old within three months of hire.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Valid Kansas driver's license or ability to obtain one.
  • No convictions for domestic violence or felonies.
  • Successful completion of police selection tests, background check, and psychological evaluation.
  • Must qualify biannually with duty weapon.
  • Ability to perform essential duties safely and effectively.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Certification or ability to be certified as a law enforcement officer in Kansas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a certified police officer.
  • Progress towards or completion of an associate's degree in criminal justice or related field.
