Hiring Incentive: $2,500 paid after 1 year of service. An additional $2,500 to be paid after 2 years of service.
Under the direct supervision of a Command Officer, Police Officers perform professional police work for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. All new hires will be assigned to the newly constructed Adult Detention Facility at the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center on any available shift. Police Officers may be assigned to the Adult Detention Facility, Field Services, or Court Services Divisions. Responsibilities include:
Specialized positions receive additional training and compensation. Employees are required to work mandatory overtime for roll call.
Background investigation (Pass/Fail), Personal Qualifications Interview (60%), Experience (25%), Higher Education (15%).
A comprehensive background check will be conducted, including fingerprinting and review of employment, financial, traffic, and criminal records. Felony convictions disqualify applicants. Disqualified applicants may reapply after six months. Candidates must pass all tests to be eligible.
The examination establishes an eligibility list for current and future vacancies, valid for six months, possibly extendable. The list is used when no current Police Officer list is available. This is a continuous examination process.
Full-time positions start at the minimum pay rate with annual increases, paid bi-weekly. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, health insurance, optical, dental, disability, life insurance, and retirement. Overtime may be mandatory or voluntary.
A pre-employment medical exam and drug screen are required. Candidates must meet MSCTC standards.
Applicants may appeal disqualifications or exam ratings within 20 days of notification, in writing.
Successful completion of jailer's training and probation is required for regular status.
Honorably discharged veterans receive up to 10 points, and service-connected disabled veterans up to 5 points, added to exam scores. Proof must be submitted at exam time.

Salary: $51,087 - $79,692 per year
