Description Of Major Job Duties

Hiring Incentive: $2,500 paid after 1 year of service. An additional $2,500 to be paid after 2 years of service.

Under the direct supervision of a Command Officer, Police Officers perform professional police work for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. All new hires will be assigned to the newly constructed Adult Detention Facility at the Wayne County Criminal Justice Center on any available shift. Police Officers may be assigned to the Adult Detention Facility, Field Services, or Court Services Divisions. Responsibilities include:

• Booking, searching, and guarding prisoners
• Maintaining order and guarding judges and juries
• Providing building security at County facilities
• Serving civil process, tracing persons, making arrests
• Performing various law enforcement duties as requested

Specialized positions receive additional training and compensation. Employees are required to work mandatory overtime for roll call.

Required Tasks

• Maintain and ensure the security of the Wayne County Adult Detention Facility and its prisoners
• Conform to rules, regulations, and procedures of the facility
• Provide humane treatment of prisoners
• Testify at legal or legislative proceedings
• Monitor, supervise, and control inmate prisoners
• Ensure inmate adherence to laws, rules, and regulations
• Prepare reports, conduct inmate investigations, transport inmates, and provide emergency assistance
• Investigate accidents and illegal or suspicious activities
• Respond to emergency alarms and situations
• Conduct daily headcounts
• Maintain operational records and prepare reports
• Record evidence with video or still cameras
• Drive and control police vehicles safely
• Take appropriate police action in emergencies
• Monitor courtroom participants and maintain courtroom security
• Assist with building security and other duties as assigned
• Provide courtroom security for judges, litigants, and visitors
• Work cooperatively with other police agencies
• Ensure accountability of inmates and accuracy of information

Qualifications

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be 18 years or older with a high school diploma or G.E.D.
• Have a valid Michigan Driver's License and a good driving record
• Pass the MSCTC Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test
• Pass the EMPCO written exam

Types of Tests

Background investigation (Pass/Fail), Personal Qualifications Interview (60%), Experience (25%), Higher Education (15%).

A comprehensive background check will be conducted, including fingerprinting and review of employment, financial, traffic, and criminal records. Felony convictions disqualify applicants. Disqualified applicants may reapply after six months. Candidates must pass all tests to be eligible.

Purpose

The examination establishes an eligibility list for current and future vacancies, valid for six months, possibly extendable. The list is used when no current Police Officer list is available. This is a continuous examination process.

General Information

Full-time positions start at the minimum pay rate with annual increases, paid bi-weekly. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, health insurance, optical, dental, disability, life insurance, and retirement. Overtime may be mandatory or voluntary.

Medical Examination

A pre-employment medical exam and drug screen are required. Candidates must meet MSCTC standards.

Civil Service Appeal Rights

Applicants may appeal disqualifications or exam ratings within 20 days of notification, in writing.

Probationary Period

Successful completion of jailer's training and probation is required for regular status.

Veteran's Preference

Honorably discharged veterans receive up to 10 points, and service-connected disabled veterans up to 5 points, added to exam scores. Proof must be submitted at exam time.
