Job Summary

The Police Lieutenant assists in managing operations for the University Police Department. This position is responsible for supervising law enforcement personnel, developing policies and training programs, enforcing university and state laws, managing special events, and serving as a liaison with internal partners and external agencies.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise patrol shift operations, reviewing and approving reports and investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and department-wide standards (e.g., Clery Act, NIBRS).
  • Respond to critical incidents, provide guidance during complex situations, and assume command in the absence of higher‑ranking personnel.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and training programs; keep personnel current on applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist in accreditation efforts and support reporting standards.
  • Evaluate employee performance and provide recommendations for promotions, discipline, transfers, leave, and professional development.
  • Mentor officers, coordinate training, and provide performance feedback to foster officer growth.
  • Conduct patrols, field supervision, investigations, case file preparation, arrests, and present evidence in criminal, civil, or university proceedings.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and external law‑enforcement agencies; represent the department at meetings and events.
  • Support community engagement initiatives that promote safety and trust across campus.
  • Conduct security assessments of university facilities, supervise support staff, manage evidence and property control processes, and maintain effective documentation and chain‑of‑custody procedures.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (Required).
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, including 3 years of supervisory experience (Required).
  • Knowledge of state and federal statutes, campus regulations, and law‑enforcement best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop personnel through training, mentorship, and consistent evaluations.
Internal Candidate Requirements
  • Promoted to Sergeant from within the University of Mississippi Police Department must have at least one year of service at the rank of Sergeant.
  • Hired at Sergeant rank must have four continuous years of service with the department.
External Candidate Requirements
  • Verifiable supervisory experience at the Lieutenant level or above for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • Any appointment not certified by the MS BELOST must become certified within one year of the appointment date, or as outlined in state law.

Compensation

$33.02 – $49.52 per hour.
