Overview

The University of Mississippi Police Department seeks a supervisory officer to lead, train, and support line officers. The role is responsible for maintaining safety and security across all campus properties, enforcing laws, conducting investigations, and fostering positive community relations.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise officers through training, scheduling, and day‑to‑day operations.
  • Develop and communicate directives, monitor compliance, and provide guidance on investigations.
  • Conduct field training for peer officers and conduct educational programming for the public.
  • Provide security escorts for special guests, university funds, and special events.
  • Assist with traffic and parking regulation enforcement, including vehicle inspection, citation issuance, and towing authorization.
  • Investigate traffic accidents, file reports, and coordinate with local agencies.
  • Prepare incident and investigative reports for administration and court proceedings.
  • Organize and conduct crime prevention training programs to raise public awareness.
  • Testify in civil and criminal courts; review cases for proper documentation and evidentiary support.
  • Perform field training officer duties and act as Officer in Charge when necessary.
  • Manage and coordinate internal security investigations, background checks, and crime intelligence.
  • Maintain physical evidence, recover property, and ensure proper documentation of evidence.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment and supplies used in investigative activities.
  • Conduct physical security surveys of university buildings and facilities.
  • Oversee officers in the absence of the lieutenant and ensure policy compliance.
  • Assist ambulance service and provide first‑aid treatment and emergency escort services.
  • Perform related or similar duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
  • Internal Candidates: minimum 3 years continuous experience as a police officer with the University of Mississippi Police Department plus a cumulative minimum of 5 years of full‑time sworn service with a law enforcement agency.
  • External Candidates: verifiable supervisory experience at sergeant level or above for at least 2 years.
  • Minimum of 3 years continuous experience as a sworn law‑enforcement officer.
Education

High School diploma or equivalent (required).

Compensation

Annual salary range: $30,020 – $45,020.
