Job description

The State University of New York at Oneonta is seeking a proactive leader to join our team as Police Academy Director. SUNY Oneonta's Police Academy has been re-imagined as a premier law enforcement training facility for the region. The SUNY Oneonta Police Academy trains and certifies law enforcement candidates to New York State and FBI standards while offering degree completion courses for university students in related fields.

The Police Academy Director will oversee program development and collaborate with internal and external constituencies to create a Police Academy that meets community objectives and aligns with SUNY Oneonta academic programs. Responsibilities include obtaining and maintaining academy accreditation, ensuring compliance with state and federal standards, and working with law enforcement entities to strategically expand offerings. As a member of the University's leadership team, the Director will contribute to setting policies, guidelines, marketing, enrollment plans, and budgets.

Responsibilities:
  • Envision and implement strategic planning and program development initiatives. Identify needs and develop projections for academy growth & organizational improvements.
  • Lead academy staff in achieving goals and objectives; communicate policy and program changes; monitor instructor performance; and provide specialized training for academy instructors.
  • Collaborate with fellow executive staff to refine the strategic vision and growth plan for the Academy. Regularly report on academy programs and activities to campus and external constituencies.
  • Develop plans for credit-bearing course offerings and micro-credentials that align with University courses of study.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Assessment to evaluate courses for overall effectiveness; make appropriate program adjustments as required; identify needs and develop plans and projections for future Academy programs; conduct annual curriculum and post-graduation reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing the academy.
  • Promote Academy offerings and achievements to market and enhance the profile of the program and university.
  • Direct all attorney assistance on legal issues involving the Academy.
  • Work closely with the Chief of Police to plan, organize, and lead the University Police Department in-service training and professional development training.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a law enforcement officer.
  • Certification as a DCJS General Topics Instructor or similar certification.
  • Ability to pass a drug screening, physical, psychological screening, and background check.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to forge positive connections between law enforcement and the community, emphasizing transparency in law enforcement while effectively serving and working with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of characteristics, services, and activities of Police Academy operations and programs.
  • Evidence of effective leadership, management, and performance evaluation techniques.
  • Familiarity with current police academy teaching methods and instruction.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree related to the criminal justice field.
  • 8 or more years of experience as a law enforcement officer.
  • Domestic Violence Instructor Certification.
  • Radar/Lidar Instructor Certification.
  • Knowledge of New York DCJS and MPTC requirements for police officers.
  • Experience as a Field Training Officer (FTO).
  • Experience as a Police Instructor in an Academy setting.
