Job description

What You Will Do

Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering (PIE) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of nuclear facility engineering capabilities to enable the Laboratory's national security and scientific missions. The Nuclear Facilities Engineering Manager 3 (NFEM-3) serves as a first‑line engineering manager responsible for assisting in the direction of a robust workforce supporting nuclear facility engineering operations, projects, and engineering programs in a high‑hazard environment.

  • Assist in directing engineering activities supporting nuclear facility operations, procurement, maintenance, design engineering, systems engineering, safety basis implementation, and engineering projects.
  • Ensure technical deliverables comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, DOE Orders, and Laboratory engineering requirements.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables are developed in accordance with LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) policies and procedures.
  • Assign qualified engineering resources to support facility engineering work, projects, and programmatic mission requirements.
  • Monitor engineering work scope, schedule, cost, and quality to achieve organizational objectives and customer commitments.
  • Lead the resolution of complex technical and operational issues affecting facility engineering systems and projects.
  • Support configuration management, engineering document control, design authority responsibilities, and engineering standards implementation.
  • Assist the Group Leader in developing staffing plans, recruiting qualified personnel, and implementing workforce development and mentoring programs.
  • Participate in forecasting staffing requirements, developing and managing budgets, and monitoring performance to ensure efficient execution of engineering programs.
  • Foster a culture of operational excellence, technical rigor, and continuous process improvement across engineering activities.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders including Laboratory leadership, DOE/NNSA representatives, and supporting organizations.
  • Promote open communication with workers and subcontractors to ensure issues are identified early and resolved effectively.
  • Ensure safety, quality, security, and environmental protection are integrated into all engineering activities via Integrated Safety Management principles.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Knowledge and experience in nuclear facility engineering operations and administration, including leading engineering activities, implementing Conduct of Engineering and configuration management programs, managing multidisciplinary teams, and handling engineering schedules, priorities, and resources. Ability to manage engineering processes such as configuration management, engineering document control, and engineering standards. Strong customer relationship building and conflict resolution skills. Working knowledge of DOE Orders, DOE standards, and the LANL Engineering Standards Manual applicable to nuclear facility engineering.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Preferred: Professional license (PE) in an engineering discipline.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of LANL nuclear facility operations and engineering programs.
  • Experience supporting engineering activities for nuclear facility infrastructure upgrades or mission operations.
  • Experience working with DOE/NSSA organizations.
  • Understanding of government contracting and procurement processes related to engineering support services and subcontract agreements.
  • Experience leading engineering process improvement initiatives and developing engineering standards or specifications.
