This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and the Rapid Response Team (PFE-RRT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking an Electrical Engineer to apply your electrical engineering expertise where it truly matters. The selected candidate will support LANL's mission by contributing technical expertise in electrical engineering for nuclear facilities. Responsibilities include ensuring electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring and critical power reliability; supporting projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development; performing engineering studies such as short‑circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting design, fault current calculations, and arc flash assessments for both medium and low‑voltage systems; and supporting demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities. Candidates may also qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) supporting LANL nuclear facilities.
In addition to the responsibilities at the lower level, the candidate at level 3 will lead and collaborate on projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development, ensuring all systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance. Responsibilities may include conducting and reviewing complex engineering studies such as short‑circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, fault current calculations, exterior lighting design, arc flash assessments for medium and low‑voltage systems, supporting demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities, and potentially qualifying as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more VSS.
Work may require 24/7 coverage, including shift, weekend, and irregular schedules. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay as assigned by management.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience. Current registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
