Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 $94,500 - $154,600

Within this job, successful candidates will have the opportunity to support LANL's mission by serving as the subject matter expert (SME) for nuclear facility electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, HVAC, power quality, fluid/utility systems, power monitoring, critical power reliability/redundancy issues, renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structural members, and developing new structures within and around the plutonium facility. Often in this role, engineers may perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs. Within this role, engineers will become familiar with pressure safety, leak testing requirements, piping supports, flow requirements, installing equipment on housekeeping pads or skids with the use of post-installed anchors, design cranes and crane girders/support structures, canopies, equipment support stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 $104,100 - $172,200

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, engineers in this position will work alongside junior and senior engineers (e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other peers in team settings to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring and leadership.

  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.

Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following, nuclear criticality safety analysis, safety basis, system engineer, project engineer, or design engineer.
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
  • Knowledge of and experience applying industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards including IBC, NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, IMC, IEBC, ASME, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Awareness of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • Awareness of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.
  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
  • Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineering certification.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds. Work Environments; work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
