Job summary

City of Houston is seeking a Plumbing Inspector for the Houston Permitting Center. The role focuses on enforcing codes, evaluating plans, and performing inspections of plumbing work to ensure compliance with specifications.

You will interact with the public, contractors, and professionals to resolve inquiries and issues. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED with up to 18 months of inspection training and at least two years of journey-level experience.

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED and up to 18 months of education or training in inspection.
• Two years of journey level or skilled inspection experience.
• May require a valid Texas Driver's License.
• Licenses/certificates preferred: State Board of Plumbing Examiners license; ICBO or IAPMO Plumbing Inspector Certificate.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate enforcement of codes, ordinances, and specs for nonstructural plumbing facilities and systems.
• Prepare, conduct, and review inspections (tunnels, manholes, shafts, construction) for code compliance.
• Issue correction notices and citations; respond to inquiries from the public, contractors, and professionals.
• Maintain records and photography for inspections; research plumbing plans and drawings; submit technical reports.
• Investigate unpermitted work and assist supervisor with special tasks.

Skills

Two years of journey level experience

Valid Texas Driver's License

Spanish language (fluency)

Education
