Position Goal

Maintain, repair and install a variety of plumbing equipment and fixtures, including water supply lines, sewage and soil pipes, vent pipes, water fountains, sinks, faucets, dishwashers, urinals, water closets, pumps and associated equipment.

Position Rate

$27.69 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Installs and maintains waste, sewage and soil pipes; vents and leader pipes for hot and cold‑water systems.
  • Assembles, installs or repairs assorted plumbing fixtures, valves and appliances.
  • Locates and marks position of pipes, pipe connections and passage holes.
  • Uses assorted hand and power tools.
  • Cuts and threads pipe and pipe fittings using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe threading machine.
  • Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe bending machine or by placing over block and bending it by hand.
  • Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of metals such as iron, steel, brass and lead, and non‑metals such as glass, vitrified clay and plastic; using hand and power tools.
  • Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, brazing, welding and caulked joints.
  • Tests systems for leaks using water, air or gas; using appropriate test gauges.
  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, drinking fountains, commodes, urinals, water heaters, water tanks, garbage disposals, dishwashers and water softeners.
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, seals, repairing broken pipes and opening clogged drains.
  • Must have working knowledge of building and mechanical codes.
  • May weld supports to structural steel.
  • Monitors work operations to ensure compliance with prescribed specifications, quality standards, and schedule commitments.
  • Maintains all equipment in proper operating condition.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
Education and Experience

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Demonstrable aptitude or competence for performing work outlined under essential functions preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Pennsylvania operator’s license.
  • City of Reading Journeyman’s Plumbing License.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to communicate scope of work and plans of action to management, building administrators, custodians, and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to complete work order forms, time sheets, and other departmental forms.
  • Ability to prepare sketches, drawings and plans.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and other construction‑related documents.
  • Ability to plan, measure and layout jobs.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts utilizing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to compute areas, circumference, length, width, depth and volume.
  • Ability to calculate percentages, discounts and total costs.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, crawl, climb; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Work involves exposure to unpleasant elements, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, loud noises, chemicals, etc. Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective gear. The employee must frequently move and/or lift up to 100 pounds, such as materials and equipment. Specific vision capabilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to hear conversations in noisy environments. The employee must be able to drive all district vehicles. The employee is responsible for providing for the safety and wellbeing of those within the immediate vicinity of where the essential functions of the job are being performed.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed both indoors and out, under all weather conditions and extremes; often in tight, uncomfortable spaces. The position demands meeting deadlines and the ability to work overtime in order to meet reporting deadlines.

Terms of Employment

As per terms and conditions set forth in the contract between the School District of Reading and the Teamsters Local Union No. 429. Continuing employment depends upon satisfactory progress and completion of a prescribed four‑year apprenticeship training program, during which the progress of the apprentice is periodically evaluated. Employment may be terminated if an apprentice does not progress satisfactorily in either apprenticeship training or performance on the job.
