Job summary

Reading School District is looking for an HVAC Licensed Mechanic to maintain and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in accordance with all safety guidelines. Qualifications

Job description

Position Title

HVAC Licensed Mechanic

Classification

Director of Facilities and/or his assignee

Position Goal

Maintain, repair and install a variety of heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration equipment, including but not limited to centrifugal chillers, reciprocating chillers, cooling towers, large air handlers, split system cooling/heat pump systems, unit ventilators, window air conditioners, air dryers, ice makers, walk‑in coolers and freezers, pumps, water fountains and associated equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Repairs and services air conditioning, heating and ventilating equipment.
  • Repairs and services pumps, air compressors and circulating pumps associated with air conditioning and heating equipment and systems.
  • Uses hand and electrical tools to complete assigned tasks.
  • Utilizes specialized test and calibration equipment.
  • Monitors work operations to ensure compliance with prescribed specifications, quality standards, and schedule commitments.
  • Repairs and replaces worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors and pumps.
  • Inventories and maintains shop stock of critical spare parts.
  • Maintains all equipment in proper operating condition.
  • Provides technical guidance and direction to lower level personnel.
  • Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings.
  • Tests refrigeration equipment for refrigerant leaks.
  • Removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats.
  • Adjusts expansion valves and adds gas to refrigeration units.
  • Checks gauges and performs preventive maintenance work.
  • Assembles and installs refrigeration or air conditioning components such as controls, gauges, valves, circulating pumps, condensers, humidifiers, evaporators and compressors.
  • Measures and cuts piping, and connects piping using welding and brazing equipment.
  • Starts up system and tests for leaks using test devices.
  • Recharges system with refrigerant, checks and tests regulators, calibrates system and performs routine maintenance or servicing.
  • Maintains cooling towers, water treatment facilities and tower distribution system.
  • Maintains electrical and pneumatic control systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the superintendent or his/her designee.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) plus 2 years apprenticeship or trades training in HVAC service and repair. (Demonstrated aptitude or competence for performing work outlined under essential functions.)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Valid Pennsylvania operator’s license.
  • Valid copy of Reading HVAC License.
  • Current certification by the EPA as a Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and technical and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate scope of work and plans of actions to management, building administrators, custodians and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to complete work order forms, time sheets, and other departmental forms.
  • Ability to prepare sketches, drawings and plans.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and other construction related documents.
  • Ability to plan, measure and layout jobs.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts utilizing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Ability to compute areas, circumference, length, width, depth and volume.
  • Ability to calculate percentages, discounts and total costs.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to collect and compile information to determine appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to adapt to unforeseen field conditions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Work involves exposure to unpleasant elements, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc. The employee must frequently move and/or lift up to 50 pounds such as materials and equipment. Specific vision capabilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to hear conversations in noisy environments. The employee must be able to drive all district vehicles. The employee is responsible for providing for the safety and well‑being of those within the immediate vicinity of where the essential functions of the job are being performed.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The position demands meeting deadlines and the ability to work overtime in order to meet reporting deadlines.
