PLC Controls Commissioning Engineer

Location: Any US state, must be near an airport
Must be prepared to travel extensively and for prolonged periods throughout the US.
A fabulous PLC Controls Commissioning Engineer role, working for one of the top Automation Systems Integrators in the US.
Position Overview
The PLC Controls Commissioning Engineer is responsible for commissioning, modifying, troubleshooting, and supporting PLC-based automation and control systems at customer sites across the United States and internationally. This role ensures projects are delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Extensive travel to project locations for extended periods is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Commission and integrate PLC-based control systems for new or upgraded automation equipment, ensuring timely and professional project delivery.
- Program, test, and troubleshoot PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric/Modicon), including writing and debugging ladder logic, function block diagrams, and other applicable languages.
- Develop and execute site acceptance testing procedures in collaboration with Project Managers and customers, ensuring all systems meet project requirements and safety standards.
- Create, review, and maintain technical documentation, including control system designs, wiring schematics, and change logs.
- Serve as the technical point of contact between the customer and project team, providing clear communication and professional support throughout the commissioning process.
- Provide both on-site and remote technical support for troubleshooting and resolving automation system issues.
- Integrate and test third-party equipment and interfaces, including HMIs, SCADA systems, industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus), and robotics as applicable.
- Ensure compliance with US safety, electrical, and industry standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 70E) during all commissioning activities.
- Prepare and deliver regular reports on commissioning and troubleshooting activities to project stakeholders.
- Maintain effective professional relationships with customers and project personnel, representing the company with integrity and technical expertise.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 5–7 years of experience as a PLC Controls Engineer, Field Service Engineer, or similar role in industrial automation.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Instrumentation, or a related field.
- Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Modicon/Schneider Electric) and HMIs.
- Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, BACnet).
- Experience with HMI and SCADA system development and integration.
- Ability to interpret and work from electrical schematics, P&ID diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 80% of the time, including extended assignments at project locations.
- Physical ability to perform material handling and work in industrial environments as required.
