Job summary

The Simons Foundation's Flatiron Institute invites a Software and Infrastructure Engineer to help maintain and grow its Scientific Computing Core resources, from supercomputers to desktops, in both on‑premises and cloud environments.

You will work with scientists to translate research requirements into scalable software, cloud solutions and workflows, support scientific applications, diagnose performance issues, and collaborate across engineering and infrastructure teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, computational science, mathematics, physics, neuroscience, biology or a related technical or scientific field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 2 to 5 years of professional software engineering, cloud engineering, research computing or related experience.
• Strong programming experience in Python and experience with another language such as Go, Java, C++, or C#.
• Proficiency with Linux environments.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Experience with containers and containerized environments including Docker; familiarity with Kubernetes is highly desirable.
• Experience diagnosing software and infrastructure problems across applications, services, operating systems, networks or computing environments.
• Experience with automation, APIs, services or tools to improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Develop, deploy and maintain software, services and tools supporting scientific computing and data-intensive research.
• Collaborate with scientists to translate research requirements into practical software, cloud and infrastructure solutions.
• Support and troubleshoot scientific applications and workflows across Linux, cloud, containerized and distributed environments.
• Diagnose performance, reliability and resource-utilization issues and optimize workloads.
• Develop automation, APIs and operational tools to improve deployment and monitoring.
• Support reproducible scientific workflows involving large datasets, ML, GPUs or other advanced computing technologies.
• Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies for scientific applications.
• Collaborate across software engineering, infrastructure and scientific teams and contribute to documentation.
