Job Description

The Plant Maintenance Manager oversees all maintenance activities at a water treatment facility, ensuring that equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role leads a team of maintenance technicians and engineers, develops and implements maintenance strategies to enhance reliability and reduce downtime, and manages budgets, procurement of parts, and vendor relationships. The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial or domestic wastewater treatment or similar settings, along with a strong focus on safety, compliance, and effective communication with staff and stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of maintenance technicians and engineers in a hands-on capacity, providing guidance and support in daily maintenance activities.
  • Oversee maintenance of various types of process equipment, piping, and control systems used in water and air pollution control operations.
  • Repair, test, adjust, and install mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, compressors, piping systems, gauges, and other process equipment.
  • Perform and oversee electrical troubleshooting on plant equipment and systems to diagnose and resolve issues promptly.
  • Carry out pipe fitting and assembly work, with particular emphasis on PVC piping systems.
  • Install or replace meters, regulators, and related measuring or control devices to ensure accurate monitoring and control of plant processes.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize preventative maintenance procedures to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Maintain detailed repair and maintenance records, ensuring accurate documentation in maintenance management systems.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety procedures, programs, and environmental compliance requirements across all maintenance activities.
  • Manage maintenance budgets, including cost control, procurement of parts and materials, and coordination with vendors and service providers.
  • Utilize maintenance management software to plan, schedule, track, and report on maintenance tasks and projects.
  • Collaborate with operations staff and other stakeholders to prioritize maintenance work and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical support in reading and interpreting schematics and performing PLC troubleshooting as needed.
  • Remain on call after hours to respond to urgent maintenance needs and support critical plant operations.
  • Contribute to project planning and execution, applying project management skills to maintenance-related initiatives when required.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial or domestic wastewater treatment or similar plant maintenance environments.
  • Strong work history in plant maintenance, preferably within water or wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Hands-on mechanical skills, including repair, testing, adjustment, and installation of pumps, blowers, compressors, piping systems, gauges, and related process equipment.
  • Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting for industrial equipment and control systems.
  • Experience with pipe fitting and assembly, particularly with PVC piping.
  • Ability to install and replace meters, regulators, and other measuring or control devices used in treatment processes.
  • Solid understanding and practical application of preventative maintenance procedures and industrial maintenance best practices.
  • Demonstrated maintenance supervision experience, including leadership of a small technical team.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and process systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and perform PLC troubleshooting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of safety regulations, environmental compliance, and industry best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with staff, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities, including coaching and performance oversight.
  • Proficiency in maintenance management software for planning, scheduling, and tracking maintenance activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Ideally holds qualifications in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related technical field.
  • Experience in plant maintenance management specifically within water or wastewater treatment operations.
  • Project management experience, including planning and executing maintenance-related projects, is a plus.
  • Certifications in maintenance management or engineering are advantageous and demonstrate professional expertise.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with a focus on reliability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively in both indoor and outdoor plant environments and adapt to changing operational needs.

Work Environment

This role is based at a water treatment plant located in the BMI complex, with work performed both outside in the plant and inside a job trailer. The standard schedule consists of four 10-hour day shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the expectation of overtime as operational needs arise. During the first few months, the successful candidate should expect to work Monday through Friday to become familiar with the team, worksite, systems, and programs. The position includes on-call responsibilities after hours for urgent maintenance needs. Typical attire includes work pants and shirt along with steel-toed boots, suitable for an industrial plant setting that involves both indoor and outdoor tasks and interaction with process equipment, piping, and control systems.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $125000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
