Job summary

Larimer County is seeking a Planning Technician in the Community Development Department to support planning and development activities, including processing land use and event applications.

You will work with applicants, owners, staff, and stakeholders to move applications through the review process, gaining exposure to land use planning and community development. A hybrid schedule is possible after probation, with occasional evening hearings.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assists with land use and special event permit applications, including intake, review, fee collection, routing, notices, hearing scheduling, recording, issuance, and file closure.
  • Reviews applications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with submittal requirements.
  • Schedules hearings, creates and publishes agendas.
  • Coordinates meeting setup, notices, and mailings for hearings.
  • Manages public hearings by greeting attendees, running webinars, managing comments, and troubleshooting tech.
  • Records approvals, drafts minutes, and retains official minutes and notices.
  • Serves as primary contact for board and commission members.
  • Provides general technical support, onboarding, training, and email setup; tracks attendance and quorums.
  • Issues short-term rental licenses, processes renewals, and monitors advertising.

Summary

Help shape the future of Larimer County! Join the Larimer County Community Development Department as a Planning Technician, where you’ll support the Planning Division and play an important role in helping residents, businesses, and the community navigate the development process. In this role, you’ll provide administrative and technical support for planning and development activities, including processing development review and special event applications, coordinating information, and helping ensure applications move efficiently through the review process. You’ll work closely with applicants, property owners, staff, and other stakeholders while gaining exposure to land use planning and community development.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys organization, customer service, problem-solving, and working with the public and wants to contribute to how Larimer County grows and develops.

This position typically works Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule after successfully completing the probationary period. Occasional evening support for public hearings and meetings is also required.

Examples of duties

What you'll be doing:

  • Assists with land use and special event permit applications, including application intake and review, fee collection, routing to internal and external reviewers, neighbor noticing, legal noticing, hearing scheduling, document recording, permit issuance, and file closure.
  • Reviews applications for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with submittal requirements.
  • Schedules hearings, creates and publishes agendas.
  • Coordinates physical and virtual meeting setup, creates, prints, and mails required notices.
  • Manages public hearings by greeting attendees, running webinars, managing online and in-person public comment, and troubleshooting technology in a public setting.
  • Executes post-hearing responsibilities by recording approval documents, composing and distributing draft minutes, and retaining official minutes, agenda packets, and legal notices.
  • Serves as the primary contact for board and commission members.
  • Provides general technical support, coordinates onboarding and training, assists with email setup, tracks attendance, ensures quorums, and processes mileage reimbursements.
  • Issues short-term rental licenses, processes renewals, evaluates license transfer eligibility, and monitors public advertising.

What we're looking for:
  • Demonstrate adaptability and technical proficiency.
  • Routine software and business applications, including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, virtual meeting and collaboration software, and databases.
  • Compile and analyze technical information.
  • Read and research county parcel maps and official plats, navigate basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) viewers, and comprehend basic legal land descriptions (such as township and range).
  • Perform tasks with accuracy, attention to detail, and correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Provide professional customer service to clients and the public, including navigating and resolving conflict situations.
Qualifications

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • One (1) year of clerical experience, including data entry and customer service, required.
