City of McAllen, TX is seeking a Planner II to perform planning studies, write reports, and present findings to advisory boards. The role covers short-range development reviews and long-range planning under city ordinances and policies.

• Conduct planning studies and research based on planning theory and local ordinances.
• Write planning reports and recommendations for advisory boards.
• Perform field inspections and review developments (rezoning, conditional use permits).
• Draft development ordinances, policies, annexation service plans.
• Analyze land use, neighborhood plans, subdivisions, and site plans.
• Meet with the public to obtain input and explain planning concepts.
• Prepare and present findings and recommendations to staff and boards.

Job description

Under general supervision, the Planner II performs research, writes planning reports, and makes presentations to advisory boards on a regular basis, covering a diversity of planning issues involving both short range development reviews and/or long range planning functions. The position requires conducting planning studies based upon the fundamental planning theory and methods molded into the local practice of planning based upon city ordinances and policies. Typical duties may include field inspections, drafting development ordinances and policies, annexation service plans, neighborhood land use studies, subdivision and site plan reviews, meeting with the public, analyzing and drafting recommendations for rezoning and conditional use permits.
