Job summary

The City of Aurora, IL is seeking a Plan Examiner in the Division of Building and Permits to conduct comprehensive plan reviews for residential and commercial structures, examining detailed architectural and engineering plans to ensure compliance with national, state and local codes.

The role includes acting as Code Official on a project-by-project basis, guiding inspectors, providing interpretations, coordinating external reviews, and contributing to code updates.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in architecture, fire protection engineering, mep engineering, or structural engineering or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in preparing and/or reviewing construction plans and specifications.
• Must pass pre-hire requirements including physical, drug screen, and background check.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive plan reviews for residential and commercial structures to ensure compliance with national, state, and local codes.
• Act as Code Official on a project-by-project basis and oversee plan reviews and inspection determinations by inspectors.
• Provide guidance, technical assistance, and code interpretations to field staff, contractors, and licensed professionals.
• Coordinate with external review agencies and participate in code updates and appeals.
